A trip to meet orangutans

It was good trip to trek to Bukit Lawang national park. Luckily, I could meet 10 orangutans during trekking. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and I enjoyed the trekking until the very end. Sorry I forgot the guide's name, but he was a very good guide

No show tour. They didn't show up. They don't pick up the phone.

No show. No one picked us up. No response from the operator, we tried calling, texting, WhatsApp, our JW Marriott manager attempted to help...nothing. I guess paying in advance & getting a confirmation means nothing to this tour operator. It really sucks to wake up early & prepare yourself for a 12 hour tour and they simply don't show up.

Private tour bukit lawang

It was a top experience. Our guides were experts and none skipped a plant or animal. At everything a fantastic explanation of smell taste experience. The lunch was also super prepared and certainly made with a lot of love. In short, do it! And by the way, we saw the primal primaries and that was our goal. Really wow!

An unforgettale tour with the best tour guides I ever had!

The best tour with the best guides I’ve ever had! Without exaggerating, our guide was the loveliest you could hope for. He was incredibly attentive, caring, and seemed to have some great connections. When we arrived at the jungle, we spotted a female orangutan within just 5 minutes. After she settled in a tree that wasn’t easy to see, our guide managed to get information about a male orangutan about 20 minutes into the jungle, even before anyone else knew about it, despite there being over six other groups around us. Seeing the male orangutan in all his glory was incredible, and our guide knew their behavior so well. We were one of the few groups who stayed ahead of the male, no matter where he went. About 80% of the other tourists only got to see his back. I had my video camera with me, and our guide adjusted the tour to help us get the best shots possible. At times, I had to zoom out just to fit more than the orangutan’s head in the frame! Both the orangutans and our guide were so calm, I never felt fear—just pure joy and excitement. Our guide was not only experienced with the animals, but also with handling tourists. He challenged us with a brisk pace, but it was completely worth every drop of sweat. It never felt like he was pushing us too hard—it was like he understood our physical limits better than we did. After he saw that we treated the animals with care and respect, he allowed us to get close, but always kept us at a safe distance. At one point, a female orangutan climbed just two meters above my head. She glanced down at me, but continued on to grab some nearby food. It was magical to see these creatures in the wild. I think we saw four or five different orangutans, and it wasn’t just brief encounters—we had over three hours of contact with them. After the hike, we took a raft back, which was perfect because we didn’t have to walk anymore. Before that, we enjoyed a refreshing dip in the river, which was just what we needed to relax. For the rafting, I had a 40L dry bag for my cameras, but they packed everything tightly in plastic bags. In the end, my dry bag didn’t get a single drop of water on it during the trip downriver. I was very grateful for that! It was a mesmerizing experience, and our guide was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. I’m already thinking about when I can come back, maybe for a longer tour. And as if all the positive things weren’t enough, there’s more. We had a private driver transport us from our hotel in Medan to the national park and back, and our guide even provided us with delicious Indonesian rice. Everything was taken care of, making the entire trip hassle-free. Everyone involved went above and beyond to make this an unforgettable experience—and they succeeded. I think it’ll be a long time before I find anything comparable to this!

Scam

We booked the trip one day in advance and received our tickets. The next day, the driver did not show up, the phone number for the provider was switched off, we contacted Viator, who tried to help but also said they could not contact them as the office would be closed for another hour. We waited until the opening time, but nothing changed, the number was still switched off, no replies vie Whatsapp, no replies via Viator chat.

Superb experience

Ucok Sirait was a fantastic guide. He reached out the day before and checked I was aware of the timings and had his contact number in case of any problems - pretty essential basic stuff, but clearly reading the other reviews this does not always happen! Overall it was a great day walking through the rainforest to see the orangutans and other monkeys/wildlife. Ucok is very knowledgeable and happy to share his insight into everything from rubber plants through to ants!

Do the trip but avoid MAM holidays

Let me start by saying the tour itself was absolutely incredible and the local guide Ucok from Bukit Lawang trekking was amazingly talented and knowledgeable. He took great care of us and ensured we saw lots of orangutans during our trek. I wish we would have booked directly with him. I cannot stress enough how good he was and that this review is absolutely no reflection on him. The rating falls down due to the tour company MAM holidays and MAM alone. We received no confirmation from them even though the trip was confirmed on trip advisor. I had to call the number provided which was actually for Ucok (not the tour company) they had not told him that we had booked and so he couldn't take us until the company had confirmed with him. This led to a lot of stress the previous evening of the tour, we had no idea if we were going or not. And we were unable to reach the tour company by email or phone. We also could not cancel without losing all the money already paid. We got up early and waited in the hotel at 7am as per the booking instructions but no one arrived. I had to call Ucok again to try and sort the problems. He eventually managed to reach the tour company and get confirmation that we had paid. This ultimately led to a 2 hour delay in our pick up and a whole lot of stress that we really did not need on our short visit to Medan. Absolutely do the trip but avoid this company.

Great family fun

My wife, our 8 year old son and I had an amazing day at Bukit Lawang. The tour was beyond our expectations: jungle trekking, rafting, local food and, of course, orangutans (lots of them). Guides Ucok and Toni were kind, knowledgeable and caring towards our son. We learned a lot and can only recommend.

Amazing experience with an incredible guide!

A genuinely life-changing experience. If you can get past the grueling terrain and tiring trek, the opportunity to see orangutans in the wild is one you can’t pass up. My tour guide, Ucok, was phenomenal. The lunch provided with fresh local fruits was delicious. He made sure I had every opportunity to see the orangutans and other wildlife up close. 10/10 would recommend for any nature lover in at least moderately good physical condition. You won’t regret it!

Fascinating encounter with Orang Utans in the wild

The driver came on time to my hotel in Medan and managed to cover the pothole-filled road to Bukit Lawang in 3 hours. My friendly and very knowledgeable guide Tondi then joined me to climb many stairs to the national park in perfect weather where after just 5 minutes we saw the first Orang Utans, albeit high up in the trees. Saw about 5 monkey species, turtles, insects and interesting flora. Delicious fruit snack and nasi goreng lunch, all of which Tondi had carried in his backpack (and was very careful removing all trash afterwards!). Finally, after a few hours of hiking, we came across, at only 10 meters away, an Orang Utan mother with her 3-year-old still nursing baby. It was a fascinating sight. The mother, not wanting to be accused of being a micromanager, watched her baby carefully but still let it practise climbing and swinging in the nearby trees and tast delicous leaves, interrupted by regular returns to sample Mommy's milk. Tondi was in text message contact with other guides so he could direct them and their groups to the location where we were mesmerized by our personal Orang Utan show. The other groups had not been as lucky - they had walked all day without seeing Orang Utans. It is was an unforgettable experience observing them in the wild, at very close distance, especially knowing that this only one of two places in the world where Orang Utans can be seen in the wild, the other one being Borneo, where a larger ground-dwelling species of Orang Utans can be found. Absolutely worth traveling here even from the other side of the world, and highly recommended!

Great experience

It was a great experiance to visit the park. Our guide was really experienced and he knows the jungle very well. We would say thay our day trip was bit more difficult then the others, but it was great because he introduced us real jungle and we saw many orangutans on our way. Our driver was great as well. He waited for us at 7:00 and he was on time. After 3 hours we reached Bukit Lawang. The village is niced and we swam in the river for sometime after our trip. Definitely take your antimosquito and long socks. It was really special and we really recommend the trip.

Scam

We booked the tour via Tripadvisor's Viator and received confirmation and pickup time. No one showed up. We tried calling the provided number, the phone was off the grid. Then we called Viator, who could not reach them either and told they would send an email, they said the office was opening only later that day. So we called as soon as the office was supposed to open, but the phone still did not work. No one got back to as, so we are only hoping for a refund now.

Jungle Trek, Jungle Trek, Jungle all the way!

We had an amazing day on this jungle trek. Our guides Tondi and Karan were polite, professional, knowledgeable and kind. They gave us lots of interesting information about the rainforest and were very understanding of our need to rest. It is obvious that they are part of a community that really cares for and revolves around the rainforest. They are passionate about showing guests the wonders of the rainforest and of course the Orangutans. The guides all work together to pass on information about where Orangutans are and we saw four separate groups and had plenty of opportunity to take pictures. The apes are not at all bothered by the people and they continue going about their business in the trees above. Things you might want to know: 1) the drive from Medan is pretty awful for the most part so prepare yourself for that. For us it thankfully only took two and a half hours each way but I am told it can take up to four. 2) You will get very wet even if you don’t chose the rafting option (which was brilliant) and will have the opportunity to swim in the river. 3) Lunch was really good and there was absolutely loads of fresh fruit. So no need to take extra. 4) the trip starts and ends in the eco-village where there are bars and restaurants, we really enjoyed a cold beer before setting off on our journey back to Medan. 5) the trekking is hot and in some places steep (both up and down). My 9 year old daughter coped with it but was wiped out by the end of the day. I would say that you do need to be in OK shape to enjoy it. 6) tips are gratefully received and I did not see an ATM. Overall I cannot recommend this trip highly enough. It was superb.

Awesome day out with a cool as guide who’s very knowledgeable. Saw heaps of animals and really up close. Food was amazing too.Would highly recommend

Lo mejor de Indonesia

El conductor fue muy amable y puntual en la recogida y regreso, preocupado porque estuviéramos a gusto. El trekking fue fenomenal, vimos orangutanes, el langur de thomas, gibones, camaleón, arañas, sanguijuelas, entre otros. Los guías se esmerarón en que pudieramos observar y conocer la fauna y la flora del parque. El tour incluye el almuerzo en medio de la naturaleza y snack de frutas, todo muy rico. Lo recomiendo 100%, fue una experiencia inolvidable.

Amazing!

Initially i waa a bit worried because its a long drive and the driver spoke no English so i wasnt certain how things were going to go. When we got to Bukit Lawang we picked up the guide and Tondi was amazing! So patient. I saw so many animals and got amazing pic and videos!

Nature pure :-)

It was just amazing! Everything went well, from the pick up at the hostel to the car ride to Bukit Lawang and the trekking. My guide Ucok did a great job, I saw orang utans and many other animals. He knows a lot about wildlife and the nature as he is a local guide. He speaks well english and is really passionated about the nature of this protected area. I can fully recommend him and this tour!

A memory for life

I and my 14 year old son did this trip from Medan. We were fetched from our house at 7 in the morning and had a pleasant drive in a big comfortable car with AC. At Bukit Lawang we were met up by our excellent guide Tondi (Tony). He is a young guy of 25 years, full of energy, speaks excellent English and really loves his work... He was very knowledge about the forest, the plants and the animals and did his utmost to give us a memory for life. The hike was adapted to our wishes - we are both quite fit so we could take a longer walk through more difficult terrain. We saw Orangutans at about 10 different occasions during the day - sometimes coming really close! We were served an excellent (and still hot!) lunch with traditional Nasi Goreng and a wonderful array of fresh fruits as dessert. As an added bonus / adventure our lunch was cut a bit short when a female orangutan decided she also wanted some of our fruits - here we were got really close to the orangutan (a power feeling!) - but we still felt safe as our guide kept us at the right distance. Apart from the orangutans we saw an abundance of other primates such as Thomas' leaf monkey, macaques and baboons. There is also a wonderful amount of different birds, trees, terminates, ants and smaller insects. Both myself and my boy also had the "joy" of getting a leech each that sucked our blood - it's all included in the experience. In the late afternoon when we returned from the hike we took a refreshing swim in the rather turbulent river passing through the small village. The water in the river was very high so Tondi had earlier advised us against doing river rafting back to the village which is otherwise an option - having the safety of the guests in mind. We returned to Medan around 19-20. Some tips - bring water (lots of water! 1.5-2 L per person), sturdy shoes that you can throw away (they get really dirty), long pants, hat and mosquito repellent. Also bring along swimwear and a complete change of clothes - you will be soaking wet with sweat and mud after the hike. If your are in Sumatra and have the possibility I would recommend this tour - you won't regret it. My 14 year old son absolutely loved it!

Wonderful hike and viewing experience

Had a couple of extra days to spend in Southeast Asia and booked a last munute trip to Medan and this tour. Everything went as planned and enjoyed spending time with the orangutans. Ucok was my guide for a solo trip and was helpful in finding the orangutans and Thomas monkeys and describing the park and the local community. I am recovering from a back injury and Ucok allowed for me to operate at a careful pace and have a successful visit.

simply amazing

we only learned about Sumatran orangutans from a surprise conversation a few days before we left home. Doing this trek and tour from Medan in one day, made for a very long, somewhat strenuous day. The trek isn't easy, but we managed, even in the mud, even in rubber sandals. Ocok, was our guide. He is amazing. I want to come back and do longer tours with him...and just spend more time with him. He did a great job. Even though we aren't promised that we'll see orangutans, we saw at least seven in our trek, including a group within our first few minutes starting out. And, when we stopped for lunch, we had another come very close to us. This was quite exciting. And there was much to see besides just orangutans, but we would have been disappointed had we missed them

Enttäuschend

Ein Fahrer hat uns sicher, schnell und äußerst freundlich von Medan nach Buki Lawang gebracht. Der Guide vor Ort war leider nicht kompetent, gab keinerlei Informationen und brachte uns mit 5 Raucherpausen im Dschungel (er rauchte, wir sind Nichtraucher) und kurzer Runde zurück zum Dorf mit der Bemerkung, dass wir alt und nicht in der Lage wären, weiter bis zum Fluss zu gehen. Der Weg dorthin wäre für uns alte Leute (sportlich, aber 63 und 65 J.) zu beschwerlich. Eine Wahl hat er uns nicht gelassen. Wir haben daher nur die Halbwilden Orang Utans Nähe dem Dorf sowie einen Weisshandgibbon und die Thomas Languren gesehen. Ob diese mehrstündige Anreise ein Erfolg wird, hängt vom Guide ab

A successful day at Bukit Lawang

Very good tour. Drove 2 3/4 hours north of Medan. Traffic and roads were exciting to say the least. Picked up guide. Good English, enthusiastic, friendly. Walked a total of 6.4 km through out the park. Saw a huge male orangutan, a smaller female orangutan, some Thomas monkeys. A very successful day. Guide brought lunch of fried chicken and rice. Cold beer at the end. Back to Medan

incredible experience

we were so close to the orangutans! we also saw few king of monkeys a peacock, and beautiful tucans the guides were awesome, always trying to show us the animals, good humor and very nice. After about 5 hours we come back to the village in a nice rafting

Amazing tour, everything exceeded my expectations.

The 3 hour drive to Bukit Lawang was long, but the driver was very skilled in trying to get out of the morning traffic jam of Medan, after that it was full speed ahead. The tour guides Ucok and Tondi were excellent, they were very knowledgeable about everything in the jungle and also things outside of it. From differentiating between male and female Giant Ants, to the different types of plants and trees, and of course, the lovely orangutans and Thomas Langurs. They work well in a team, with Ucok going on ahead to find the orangutans while Tondi lead my friend and I through the jungle while giving facts about interesting things he sees. Ucok and Tondi were also very friendly, social and hilarious, making it feel like we're just trekking with our friends. I'm not the most fit person, but the trek didn't feel tiring and it was a good balance between walking and taking a break. We had plenty of time to watch the Orangutans; the guides were very chill and let us enjoy the nature at our pace. There was a lot to see, do and enjoy. Lunch was in the jungle and it was very delightful, with pineapple and passion fruit for dessert. After the trek we headed to the river and we were able to dip into the river and have a swim. After the long trek, it was very refreshing to have all the sweat washed away by the river. A great ending to the day!

We hadden een 1- dag trip geboekt vanuit Medan. Veel dieren gezien: 2 moeders met baby Oerang Oetans en een mannetje, Withandgibbon, Thomas Leaf apen, grote Argus fazant. Ucok en zijn broer waren erg enthousiaste gidsen! Zeer aan te raden.

Seeing 🦧🦧 in real life!

Our day started with our driver picking us up at our hotel in Medan. It was 3 hour drive to Bukit Lawang. When we got out of the car, our guide Ucok was waiting for us. We picked up his brother Tondy on our way to the border of Gunung Leuser National Park. Within 10 minutes we saw our first orangutans. A female with a baby. In total we spotted 8 different orangutans during the trekking!!! It was such a lovely and exciting day. Ucok and Tondy are really passionate and have a lot of knowledge about the jungle. They can tell you all about the animals and the trees. We can really recommend booking with Ucok and Tondy. We had a great time and the lunch/fresh fruits and rafting was amazing! The rafting is a fun and easy ride with beautiful sights of the jungle. The fruits were actually so good, that a orangutan came to steal our pineapple. We were definitely a bit scared, since we didn’t see her coming, but our guides made sure we were safe! During the trekking, the climbs and heat can be challenging. So make sure you wear good shoes and bring enough water. Also don’t forget mosquito spray! There are a lot of mosquitoes once you enter the national park. Book this trip and have an amazing jungle experience! 🦧🌴

Fantastic one day excursion to see the wild Orangutans with Ucok

Excellent one day trip with Ucok into the forests at Bukit Lawang. Ucok had amazing insights into the wildlife and the jungle he has grown up in. I highly recommend trekking with him if you are looking to explore the jungles in Northern Sumatera. I will definitely be doing this trip again for more days.

Great Tour

Pickup and drop off from hotel in Medan (bear in mind its a 3+ hours drive). Car was clean and comfortable. Guides were very friendly, spoke very good English. Felt safe at all times. Got to see a few Orangutans up close, as well as other animals. Worth the price. Highly recommended

schöne tour durch den dschungel auch bei rgenzeit

Wir haben im „Thomas Retreat“ gewohnt und eine Tagestour durch den Dschungel unternommen. Ren, der Guide, ist sehr kompetent, weiss vieles über Flora und Fauna und weiss, wo die Orang Utans sind! Sehr empfehlenswert!

Bukit Lawang jungle trekking

Met een gids de eendaagse trekking gedaan. Wat een ervaring vooral als je de Oerang Oetangs weet te vinden. Hebben een Mannetje gezien en later een Moeder met een kleine bij zich. Moeder houdt alles goed in de gaten. Sommige mensen zien de Orang Oetangs niet de andere apen wel.. Gids past zich goed aan de mogelijkheden van de groep. Wij waren de oudste 74 jaar maar zeker niet de zwaksten. Groep bestond ook uit 40 jarigen die moesten er soms hard aan trekken. Een goede conditie is een vereiste. Ook op de dag trekking bij een meerdaagse terkking hebt je het zeker nodig

Private day tour to Bukit Lawang

It was a gruelling trek for two senior citizens, one with a knee replacement.Ucok and Memet held my hand supported me all the way, otherwise I could not have made it.They explained about all the various trees in the Jungle.We got to see 3 Orang Utans and some Tomas Monkeys. The tube rafting at the end of it was exhilarating.I wish I had done it earlier when my knees were stronger!

Excellent. The trek is very hard work but worth it in the end. Ucok was an excellent guide and looked after me. Everyone should take the rapid trip to finish. Overall 5 stars.

Superb!

Have done many treks all around Asia...this is one of the best! The guide boys were excellent. They were friendly, polite and very helpful. Pickup and drop back in Medan was very good. The forest is very dense and well kept. We saw a few Orangutans and funky monkeys. Fruit lunch was cool. The trek took 3.5hours. We finished the final part by water rafting. Overall: Excellent day trek; highly recommended.

Awesome day!

If you are visiting Medan and don’t have a lot of time but still want to experience a day in Bukit Lawang, this is definitely the tour for you. At first I was a little skeptical and thought it wouldn’t be enough time to see everything we wanted to, but we got to see a lot of jungle action and Tondy and Dany were amazing guides, really knowledgeable, funny and respectful of the animals and the environment. We got to see tons of monkeys, some orangutans, birds and the rafting at the end was fun! We’d love to come back for the overnight experience

Awesome experience

We really enjoyed it!! All organized from pick up to drop off. Ucok and Danni were very friendly and took their time to tell everything about the jungle in Bukit Lawang, they also making a lot of fun and jokes. The fruit was so sweet and the nasi goreng tasted wonderful. We saw 7 orang utans and several other monkeys. Going to the end of the hike by tubes was really cool! Highly recommend it for sure!!

Totally recommended.

We had a wonderful day with Ucok and his friend André. The driver picked us up at 07:00 and at 9:30 we already arrived at bukit lawang (even tho it was national independence day). Ucok arrived immediately and we started the tour. He was very friendly and informative. We saw a lot of Orang-Utans from a very very close distance and even saw some other monkies. The lunch was some of the freshest we had until then (with looots of fruit). After the trekking we went swimming in the river and Ucok brought us watermelon into the water (very nice). Then they gave us some jungle make up and a crown made out of leaves, with which we river rafted down the river to the city where everyone was celebrating. Then our driver took us back to the hotel. Really worth the money and Ucok is an awesome guide.

What a wonderful day! Highly recommend!

This experience was way more than I expected. We were guided by Ucok and his brother Tondy trough this trek in the jungle. They seemed nice from the beginning and, as the time passed by, the initial impression was confirmed. Kind, informative and ready to explain all the details about the nature surrounding us, for which they showed great love and dedication. We were lucky enough to experience a sunny day with clear skies, nature was on our side! Since the first steps on the path, we immediately heard calls and found some monkeys hanging in the nearby trees. Probably less than 200 meters after we were greeted by a family of Orangutans having breakfast by the border of the jungle. I couldn't have asked for a better start! The trek continued as we hiked through the jungle, following the path of our expert guides. We stopped for a short break with local fruits and later on we enjoyed an amazing lunch while sitting in the shade of the trees. The last part of our hike was downhill, in the direction of the close stream. There we hopped on simple rafts and slid our way back to the starting point. It was so much fun! I didn't stay for the night but, looking back, I really wish I did. It would have been a way to enjoy even more staying in this magical place. To sum up, I would totally recommend this experience, it's totally worth it!

Amazing Jungle Experience!

This one day trek is a must for anyone wanting to see orangutans and learn more about the environment in Bukit Lawang. Took a roughly 3 hour drive from Medan to Bukit Lawang, where we met with our guide Ucok and his brother. They were great guides, they took the time to explain the significance and use of the plants we passed by, such as trees used for latex, and taught us other things about the animals we saw. We were able to see 5 orangutans, including a baby, and many other macaques and monkeys. We stopped by a stream for a delicious rice and vegetable lunch with fruit for desert before continuing, and at the end of the hike we ate more fruit and relaxed by the river before taking a very beautiful and fun rafting trip down the river back to where we started, and our driver drove us back home. It was a great experience, and everything was as promised. Highly recommend booking this trek with Ucok!

DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!

I hardly write reviews but visiting Bukit Lawang was the highlight of my holiday! We saw a number of Orangutans and Thomas Leaf monkeys and the entire tour was well organised and put together. Our tour guides Ucok and Wawan were really friendly and knowledgeable too. They also both kindly assisted us throughout the trek, which at times we did struggle with. The rafting was very fun too! If there is anything I would change, it would be our decision to only do a day trip. It is worthwhile spending longer. Can't recommend this trip enough.

The tour started off badly as they...

The tour started off badly as they sent somebody who I thought was our guide/driver who did not speak English. We were on our way back to our hotel because it was impossible to spend a day and to go trekking with somebody who did not speak English. However, in the nick of time, the Agency explained that the person driving was not our guide but just he driver to Bukit Lawang, where we would meet our guide who did speak English. The drive to Bukit Lawang is around 5 hours, with the last two hours spent driving through palm oil trees on a small road, which means that the going is slow as they are quite a few trucks transporting the palm oil fruit to the processing facilities. We arrived at Bukit Lawang at around 11:30 hours, where we met Ucock, our guide and almost immediately started our trek. to the Gunung Leusr National Park.
